viticella pruning

This question was asked by
Mary J

I’m in the process of putting together an order for a pergola which already has two climbing roses recently planted – The Pilgrim and scarlet Cascade. I wanted to plant viticella (something Corning?) with the scarlet rose, as I thought the nodding heads and the colour would blend prettily, but worry about the pruning as I am elderly and couldn’t reach up and yank ! any suggestions would be much appreciated. Iam looking to plant up to four, including Armandii snowdrift, hopefully. Advice would be much appreciated – I really want you to say that I don’t really need to prune to viticella … but I worry it may get out of hand.

Hi Mary, Viticella types only flower on new growth, so if you didn’t prune them the flowers would get higher and higher ( or in your case further over the pergola each year) thus making the bottom all bare stems and no flowers.

When it comes round to pruning early march, the clematis don’t have any leaves on them (they are just ‘dead sticks’ in effect) so they don’t take much pulling out after cutting them really.

I suppose it would not be the end of the world if you just cut them and then left all the old stems exactly where they are – as the fresh growth would just about cover them anyway.

I hope this helps, and the one you speak of is called ‘betty corning’ please click the link below
Cheers

Blue Angel clematis Harrogate

This question was asked by
Doreen S

I want to buy Clematis Blue Angel at Harrogate Flower Show on Friday, 26th, so could you reserve for pick-up then please?
I can pay now on line just to make sure I get 1.
Thank you.
Doreen Soulsby

Hi Doreen, I’m afraid we are not going to be at Harrogate Flower Show. We do however offer an excellent mail order service all around the UK – if that’s of any use to you at all ?
Hope this helps
Many thanks

App

This question was asked by
John D

Is your clematis app available on IPad
JD

Hi John, we have had a mobile and tablet version of our website created and they are both up and running fine. This has taken over from the app, however the app will still work on your ipad but you have to hold the ipad lengthways (like a phone) / portrait style as it wont do the Landscape mode
Hope this helps

Clematis Amber

This question was asked by
Geraldine T

I have a privet bush which had grown very large but when cut down we discovered there are areas of nothing where there used to be clematis and honeysuckle. We should like to re-instate a clematis to cover this bush to hide the gaps and wonder whether Amber would do the trick, otherwise can you suggest anything. Ideally no pruning (rather difficult in such circumstances) and flowering for a good deal of the year. Hopefully Amber will do the job as it is so lovey.

Hi Geraldine, Yes Amber will be a good choice for your bush, I’m sure it will do the job very well and give you many years of pleasure, the link to her is below 🙂
Cheers

Looking for a clematis

This question was asked by
Jane M

Hello. I used to have what i thought was called Clematis songarica. It had pale greeny flowers and dramatic seedheads, and it used to die back completely in autumn and regrow in spring.. it was a strong rambler.
Can you help me? I would love another one.

Thank you. Jane.

Hi Jane, the nearest possible thing that we have is called ‘Vitalba’ (see link below)
it looks almost identical , flowers at the same time and grows the same way etc.etc.
Many Thanks
Chris

Hi, I would like to send you a photo of a clematis i bought from you a couple of years ago which has never been happy. I am wondering what I have done wrong.
Do you have an email address as I don’t know how to arrack a photo to this form.
Many thanks
Liz

Hi yes you should be able to attach it to this email reply now.
We would need to know the clematis name, and what its been fed with and how often, when its been pruned and how hard- then what the soil is like in the planting area please. In order to make a good assumption, before commenting really
Thanks in advance

Fragrant Oberon

This question was asked by
Melanie L

Hi, I’ve been waiting for about a year for this to be back in stock – do you know when it will be available, as I was previously told last September.

Thanks
Melanie

Hi Melanie, Its not been an easy one to propagate for the breeder (we are not the breeder of this one) so its all in his hands at the moment. The last time we spoke he said that there should be some ready after Chelsea flower show, so probably give me a ring early june (as I wont be releasing them to the internet if there are less than 50 plants available)
Hope this helps
Thanks
Chris

Gift

This question was asked by
Patricia L

Hello I would like to send 2 x White Pearl to my cousin for their 30th Wedding Anniversary (27 April). Is it possible to include a gift card and not include the invoice? Many thanks.

Hi Patricia, Yes we do this all the time for people, Just type your message in the box provided at step 3 of the checkout process. We then hand write it onto a card and put it in with the clematis (free of charge)
and yes of course we wont include any payment information (we automatically refrain from this when we see the plant is going to a different address other than the billing address)
So nothing to worry about – go ahead and order – the website will give you a list of delivery dates to choose from when you get to step 3 of the checkout process too
Hope this helps, The link to white pearl is below
Cheers Chris
