Clematis Nubia new for 2018, Brand new Raymond Evison variety for 2018 - Launching at Cheslea Flower Show 2018
The combination of strong red tepals with a dark centre make for a striking flower that is probably displayed best in a sunny or partially sunny area. This is a compact variety that is a good choice for patio containers, potts or planters.
Nubia was mentioned by Robin Lane Fox in his column in the Financial Times just before Christmas, as one of his favourites to give as a gift :-

Next up is a plant for anyone with a balcony, a mini-courtyard or so much room that you feel embarrassed about trying to give them anything. Raymond Evison’s new class of clematis for growing in pots is what we all need: they are up to 4ft high on a single strong cane, covered in flowers and willing to survive during your fortnight’s summer holiday. In his nursery-glasshouse in Guernsey, Evison once told me that he had been impelled in this direction by the potential demand in Japan for clematis for small urban spaces. We are all the beneficiaries. His range can be ordered for immediate dispatch from gold-medal-winning Taylors near Doncaster. You will be spoiled for choice, but there are discounts at present for orders of more than five plants. My current top picks are the dark-glowing-red Nubia and icy-blue Parisienne, each for sale in good 2l pots at £16 a time. These superb clematis grow no more than 3ft-4ft high and can be pruned neatly into shape. They flower on and off from May to early October and are extremely easy to please.
