With the rapid decline of bees in the last few years here are a selection of clematis that we feel are especially attractive to bees and butterfly's. Bees love a varied Menu so aim to provide a mixture of colours and textures as well as flower shapes and plant heights. The 1st solitary bees emerge very early in the spring, so any of the alpina & macropetala varieties would be ideal for this period Large mid season single flowered varieties will provide pollen for May & June For later flowering varieties, look at the integrifolas and any 'bell shaped' flowers as these are also very effective I will be adding individual varieties here throughout the season and adding photo's off the bees etc.. But until then, for starters I have added an Icon of a butterfly to about 100 varieties within these 6 main types of clematis click these links below, then click into varieties to see what I mean:-

Hi. I am looking for a clematis suitable for a north facing garden which will grow along a fence, be scented and attract bees! The place I have in mind gets sun ion the late spring to early autumn but is otherwise shaded. Many thanks, Jane

Hi we are still learning about exactly which ones attract bees our section on this is still very limited as it will take us some time before we have researched this topic fully.
So if it has to be scented I would probably start with our section for those ones and then take a look at all of them and see what you think really.
Please find the link below
However if scent is not imperative then please see our section on the ones we know of that are good for bees below that
